Wheel bearing failure is "one of the most common causes of incidents when towing a boat trailer", according to Dunbier, one of the trailer builders whose own maintenance advice carries that warning. That is a trailer maker's own claim rather than independent incident data, but the underlying point holds regardless: a boat trailer's hubs go under water most times the boat is launched or retrieved, and a caravan or box trailer's generally do not.
That difference in exposure changes how often the bearings need attention and what to look for before you tow.
Why they fail faster than a car or caravan trailer's
Saltwater ingress can corrode a wheel bearing and emulsify its grease once it gets past the seal, according to Superior Trailer Parts, an Australian trailer parts supplier. The seals fitted to a standard road trailer are not built to handle that: they "use mild steel springs" that, the company says, "fail quickly after saltwater exposure, leading to bearing failure within just a few trips." It is worth checking whether a boat trailer actually has marine-rated seals fitted, rather than assuming it does.
Inside the hub, Superior Trailer Parts says Australian trailers generally run one of two bearing patterns, plus a third for heavier rigs:

Heavy-duty tandem trailers can instead run parallel bearings, with two identical large inner bearings rather than a smaller outer one. The patterns are not interchangeable, so it is worth confirming which one is fitted before buying a kit off the shelf. The bearing race itself usually carries a stamped part number (codes like LM11949 or L68149), and a digital vernier caliper will confirm the size if the number is worn away. Dunbier and Easytow both publish owner's manuals for their own models as well, which is worth checking first if the trailer is a known brand.
How often to service them
Superior Trailer Parts draws a clear line between the two use cases:

Those are two different triggers, a distance or a time on one side and a count of dunkings on the other, so a heavily used boat trailer can hit its service point well before six months is up. Melbourne repairer Duncan Reid, quoted in Trade-A-Boat, put the minimum at checking every 12 months, and pointed to a trailer at his own workshop that had gone 12 years without needing a bearing replacement through nothing more than staying on top of it. "Fresh lubricant has been responsible for that," he said. "So regular checks are a cheaper way to go in many cases." Treat that as a floor, not a target, given what Superior Trailer Parts recommends for saltwater use.

Signs your bearings need attention
You do not need to pull the hub apart to get a read on how a bearing is doing, though the first check needs the trailer stationary rather than on the road. Dunbier's own procedure is to make the trailer safe, jack up one side so the wheel spins freely, rotate it by hand and listen, then grasp the wheel at the outer edges and try to wobble it without turning it. Any play means it is worth having looked at. From there:
- Grease that has gone black, which Superior Trailer Parts says means it "has broken down due to high temperatures"
- Grease that looks "like a milky latte", which Superior Trailer Parts says means water has already got past the seal
- "Glitter", small silver flakes in the grease, which Superior Trailer Parts says are actual pieces of the bearing or race wearing away
- Grease visible on the inside of the rim, which Dunbier flags as a sign the seal itself needs replacing
- On inspection, bearings that are pitted, discoloured (blued or blackened), scored, galled or rusted should be replaced outright rather than just re-greased, according to Boating Mag
If it needs a repack, do it properly
This is Superior Trailer Parts' method, for a standard taper-roller bearing, rather than a universal procedure for every hub: place a large amount of grease in your palm and repeatedly press the edge of the bearing into it until grease is forced through the cage and out the other side. Done properly, every roller comes out coated. The company warns that a quick smear over the outside of the bearing leaves the rollers dry inside, which is what causes the rapid overheating a smeared bearing is prone to.
Once the hub is back together, Superior Trailer Parts' own instructions are to "tighten the castle nut firmly while rotating the hub to seat the bearings", then "back the nut off roughly 1/6th of a turn to allow for thermal expansion" and secure it with a new galvanised split pin, aiming for the 0.1mm to 0.15mm of end play the company specifies. Other trailer brands and repairers set this differently, so where a manufacturer's own manual gives a figure, follow that instead. Too tight and the bearing runs hot on the road; too loose and the wheel rocks on the spindle, which is the same play you are checking for when inspecting an old one by hand. If any of this is outside your comfort zone, it is a short job for a trailer mechanic.
Worth checking before you buy, too
If you are shopping for a used boat, ask whether the trailer's bearings have been serviced and when, and ask for anything in writing: an invoice or workshop record means more than a seller's memory.
